Brand Story
A personal encounter with a vitrectomy and overcoming the fear of losing vision is what led to the birth of Retina Recovery Rentals.
In 2016, founder Shawn Johnson was playing hockey with a friend -- just a casual game of pickup. The two collided, Shawn fell, and then he realized his eye had been damaged.
“My eye felt like something was in it, but I was wearing a visor so I knew that nothing was in it,” Shawn says. “But I could tell something was wrong.” That feeling became even more pronounced a couple of days later when he realized he couldn’t see a restaurant server standing right next to him.
“It was like a black curtain on the right side of my vision,” he says.
Shawn went to the hospital, where he was told that he would need immediate surgery to repair a detached retina. This was actually his third surgery for the condition but the first one that involved a vitrectomy.
The vitrectomy and retina repair were scheduled for the next day and it was when Shawn learned he would have to stay face down for the next four weeks to recover.

The Recovery
It all happened so fast. Shawn says his biggest fear after the vitrectomy was that he would lose his vision.
He struggled to find the equipment and support he needed to recover from the procedure safely and comfortably. He spent hours researching online, reading different articles, and figuring out what will protect their eyesight during recovery.
“That's what I did when I went through the procedure,” Shawn says of that less-than-ideal method, “find anything that I thought could help me, something that could reassure me that my eyesight was going to remain intact.”
“It's not just laying on the couch,” Shawn said of the post-vitrectomy recovery period. “It's keeping your head down while you go to the bathroom, while you eat, while you're hanging out.”
Without the proper equipment to support maintaining a face-down position for two to eight weeks as the eye heals and the vitreous gel slowly regenerates, that recovery period can be very difficult.
Then, his mother found a company that rented recovery assistance equipment. The moment he got his recovery kit, Shawn says, “I knew right then I'd be okay.”
“It felt like heaven when I slipped into it,” he says.
Having the correct equipment allowed Shawn to breathe a sigh of relief for the first time since the surgery and enjoy many of his regular activities, like watching Toronto Blue Jays games, while recovering safely.

The Birth of Retina Recovery Rentals
A passionate entrepreneur, Shawn saw an opportunity to make an experience he understood on a personal level more comfortable and reassuring for other patients. He considered acquiring the business from which he had rented his own recovery equipment, but ultimately decided that he could improve on that model by offering comfort kits that include everything needed to recover from a vitrectomy, delivered to homes across the country.
That’s why he’s started Retina Recovery Rentals, a company that provides vitrectomy patients with all-inclusive comfort kits that provide everything they need to recover from their surgeries and preserve their eyesight, without the hassle of managing multiple equipment rentals or searching for good recovery advice.
Shawn spent a year building Retina Recovery Rentals, all the while informed by his own experiences with three eye surgeries, including vitrectomy. He understands that there is a particular fear around eye surgery — the idea of potentially losing your eyesight is uniquely upsetting. He’s had the experience of realizing that his vision is damaged, and felt the worry associated with a long recovery period that involved important and specific instructions.
Shawn wants to remove one of the fears surrounding vitrectomy for patients, while making this important part of their successful recovery — renting the equipment they need — easy and stress free. The focus is on both educating and empowering people about their options for recovery.
The appeal of the business comes in part in showing people that though the experience of eye surgery and the post-surgery recovery period might be stressful, it’s not one they have to go through alone. As the only child of a single mother, Shawn says he spent a lot of time on his own. Now he loves to be around other people, and he wants to extend that sense of community and support through his entrepreneurial venture.
“I didn't ever want anybody just feel like they were alone, and I think that's where wanting to help people comes from” he says. This emotion is especially prevalent when someone is recovering after a vitrectomy.
“It's about letting them know what their options are and letting them know that wherever they’re at, it’s going to be okay.”
